Ethics in Practice: Ethical Standards for Migration Agents

Mandatory – Ethics (Category A) – M1A

Participants work through seven interactive ethical dilemmas drawn from everyday practice – the client who wants the story “improved”, referral fees and commissions, the hopeless case, the colleague cutting corners, the vulnerable client, confidential information, and the use of AI in drafting – and leave with a five-anchor ethics framework, a 60-second “daylight test” for decisions, word-for-word scripts for saying no, and three practice policies. All content is referenced to the Code of Conduct (Migration (Migration Agents Code of Conduct) Regulations 2021). Capped at 30 participants; live polls and chat discussion throughout. Participants must attend the full session to claim the point. Topic: ethical standards for migration agents (CPD Instrument 2026, s 6(3)(h)(i)).

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. 01By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  2. 021. Distinguish ethical standards from Code compliance, and explain why both matter (Code s 13(1)(d); s 6).
  3. 032. Apply the five ethical anchors – honesty, independence, confidentiality, competence & care, respect & fairness – and link each to the Code sections that enforce it.
  4. 043. Use the five-question “daylight test” to make and document defensible decisions under pressure.
  5. 054. Recognise the red-flag phrases and situations that signal ethical risk – embellished evidence, referral fees, hopeless cases, vulnerable clients, confidential information and AI-drafted work.
  6. 065. Respond to common client and colleague pressures with practical scripts that protect both the client and the agent’s integrity.
  7. 076. Implement three practice policies (third-party payments, conflicts, data & AI) and one weekly habit that make ethical practice routine.
